Good news, dumb ph*qyng news
Apr. 13th, 2005 09:45 pmI was so about to tell the story of my wicked cool weekend, wherein I had an argument with a guy that looked like the comic book shop guy from the Simpsons and turned out to be a comic book guy -- Peter David (he did the Hulk).
However, I must instead tell you about the ultra cool gift I received today from
tkitch. He called my cel around lunchtime and said "you're picking me up from work. I've got a present for ya." So I picked him up from work in Chinatown.
Guess what my gift was. All you geeks ought to sit down.
It's a Sun Ultra AXi motherboard complete with UltraSPARC IIi 440MHz CPU (2 MB cache, dude!), a gig of RAM and four hot-swappable SCA drives (SCSI in sleds) of 9.1 GB each. All of this in a nice black 2U box. Yes, it's the bomb diggity! Doesn't Kitch rule?
I'd love to tell more friends about it. However, that's where the bad news comes in. My Dreamscape account is acting stupid again. I can't get to it. I can't tell whether I screwed up or they screwed up or fuggin what. So yeah. You'll have to use traditional methods of communication (smoke signals, bellowing, the Horn of Urgency) to contact me.
Any minute now.
Oh yeah, the calls have got to be coming.
(crickets chirp)
Anyway, let's hope everything is working by the weekend. I need to email my mom some driving directions (she's coming to visit on Sunday).
Okay, back to my attempt to install Gentoo on this box. Toyzzzzzzz!
-and it's not any kind of loud either, Dante
Update: It's got EDO-speed RAM (this is slow -- 60ns, whereas PC100 is about 7.5ns). The rough test of speed came back with 878.18 BogoMIPS, roughly that of a Pentium 2 450 MHz. However, I think the numbers miss the oompf this beast has and will have again. It doesn't have RAID 5 support. However, it has an ethernet card that (I am not making this up) got detected as a "HAPPY MEAL (PCI/CheerIO)". I've seen mention of the Happy Meal when I've compiled kernels for Linux but I never thought I'd have one. Geektastic.
