Laundry update
Sep. 29th, 2004 02:02 amAs of right now (2 AM EDT 29 Aug 2004) I have two loads of laundry finishing up their tours of duty in the dryer and two other loads finished with the washing machines and waiting for their turns in the heated tumbler. One of my favorite bedsheets, this soft grey thing with a high thread count, got turned to shreds on one corner. I don't know how! I don't remember it happening.
The Win2k side of this computer is almost finished. Soon I'll turn my attention to making a Gentoo Linux side. I suspect I shan't be very fast about that but I'll be eager to see the results.
You know that ReplayTv I bought used? All of the sudden it won't play back anything other than live TV. I tried shutting it off for a day but that didn't work. I tried recording something new, which it did. I could see it in the stacks of recorded objects. I couldn't get the cursor to highlight a single item in that window. This pisses me off.
hakamadare, got any ideas? Did this happen to you?

Date: 2004-09-29 06:40 am (UTC)so, i figure you probably have some threshold amount of money that marks the boundary between "not much" and "much" - that is to say, you probably have some sum of money that you're willing to impulse-spend in a given transaction, even if the return is not guaranteed.
in my case, for example, that sum is $20. as such, i'm generally willing to spend up to $20 on a transaction without thinking about it too much, and if the transaction turns out in retrospect not to have been a good idea, oh well, it was less than $20. i'm not arguing that this particular threshold is a good one for you (or even that it's a good one for me), but my point is this: if you want to avoid eBay-related angst, don't ever spend more than your threshold amount on any given auction. thus, even if the worst-case scenario occurs (i.e. you send your money to the seller, and you never hear another word or receive your item), it's nothing to lose sleep over.
i tend to give similar advice to others concerning PayPal, btw.

p.s. a brief search indicates that, in fact, the cheapest source for replacement ReplayTV remotes is ReplayTV. a few weeks ago i was seeing them on eBay for $20, but there aren't any available now.

Date: 2004-09-29 06:44 am (UTC)what's more, when you shut it off for a day, did you disconnect the power? powering it off from the remote, or the front panel button, does not actually reboot the system.
good luck,
steve
