Maggie and I are sitting at our computers, awaiting the next intervention by the cat. A Pearl Jam song comes on -- "Yellow Ledbetter". It dawns on us that neither of us know the lyrics to this one at all. I decide to look up lyrics. I then try to sing along with enunciative qualities.

Some of you may say "but, Vedder is incapable of being parsed. That's the point. He's eternally drunk." Oh, but we have to try! It's human destiny to solve the Riddle of the San Diego Sphinx. Besides, I never understood the first few R.E.M. albums but I played 'em over and over. When I found out the line was "she is selling faith on the hotel crusade" and not "Sheila's Ellen pain on the go-tell crusade", I almost cried.

So I'm singing along. In the middle of one mumble, some of the words flow properly and I say aloud, "say, these might be the actual words."

Maggie laughed very hard and said "post that! Now!"

This brings us to right now. Tomorrow, I'll have actual computer work to do.

You know what? You are totally right on. I love that song, and yet, as I sing it in my head, I realize that I don't actually know a singly lyric! I usually just hum-mumble along. Geez. In terms of un-knowablilty of lyrics "Yellow Ledbetter" really takes the cake.

I thought for years that the Cocteau Twins were just singing nonsense sounds or MAYBE french. I'm still not convinced. Hello.
