If you don't live in Massachusetts, you may still know the name Mitt Romney. Then again, you'd have to be an Olympics buff -- he helped Salt Lake City's recent Jeux d'Hiver (literally, "Juicy Hives") turn a profit. If you live in Massachusetts, you still don't know much more about this gubernational candidate, except that he didn't live here for three years but claims Massachusetts is his home state.
Scandal! Horror! Not really, I'd say. I don't even want him to win (I signed the petition for Robert Reich), but I don't mind the guy. However, the Democrats have decided it's vital to get the truth about Romney not filing as a resident when he worked in Utah.
The primaries haven't even happened. No one is an official party candidate yet. However, the Democrats are so scared of Romney that they've sponsored an inquest into his tax status.
Romney was born and raised in Belmont, a nice suburb of Boston. He admits he filed as a non-resident for tax purposes, as he maintains a home in Utah. The Boston Globe quotes him as offering to pay the tax difference of $54,000.
Let's think as humans instead of as Massholes for a moment. If you could get a sizable tax break completely legally, you'd take it. Duh. He did.
Should the governor be a resident of the state? Oh yeah. However, Massachusetts has no mansion for the guv; I'd say they should put the tax he offers to pay into an escrow. Heck, I'm a taxpayer and I'm still not sure I think he should cough up the money. As long as he files in-state while he's in office, I'll let the rest slide.
Why isn't being born here and owning an expensive house here good enough for the Democratic Party? They look like utter xenophobes when they decide this is a problem.
In the Dem's defense, not all of their candidates for the nomination are in favor of this investigation. Reich isn't.
Romney is taking this in stride. He is getting free air time. He looks unrumpled. He comes off as mature. He is making people want to vote for him.
If the Democrats were smart, they'd stop this parochial nonsense and get on with the issues. There are plenty of them -- such as why it's okay that 540,000 state tax forms have not been processed and won't be until August.

Renderking shrugs...
It's like I said in reference to another controversy... if someone on your side gets way with something- it's fair game. If it's something that helps the other team... it's a foul and we need to dispatch the retarded media figurehead to cry and bemoan.
The commercials that are on the air now from the DNC sound childish and prove the point that the DNC is morally bankrupt in this state.
It's unfortunate that the only Democrats who makes any sense to me are transplants... Ironically one's from Upstate New York, and the other was a part of Clintion's cabinet as Labor Secretary.
Retch (SP?) has one good thing going for him... he doesn't want to resort to name calling but talk about the issues.
