How do they make money? Volume!
Jun. 13th, 2002 10:24 pmThis is a continuation of a line of thought
hakamadare had a week or so ago about banner ads in the free version of the Opera web browser.
The ads I've seen all week are terrible in a new way. They aren't obnoxious, flashy, or even offensive. They're just dull.
Imagine a one-panel comic about something happening at an office. It's not particularly funny. You might assume, as I had, that this wouldn't really entice many people to click on it and it would go away.
It was replaced by another humorless comic by the same author. In fact, there are about five they're recycling. Almost no other products are being advertised this week -- just a link to a comic site run by the browser company.
How can this lead to any profits? Who would want to see more cartoons written by committee? Do people click because they hope to find at least one funny thing at the real site?
This stuff is so dull that it reminds me of Ted Rall. Oh wait, maybe that's because this guy copied Rall's type of human and has a similar name.
I'm afraid I don't even have any answers. Anyone?
-back to reading about hard drive setup, ps/d
P.S.: After I finished this, I finally got new ads for a DVD store and an actual web comic, User Friendly. Hey, at least they're not pr0n or scams.

Date: 2002-06-14 07:11 am (UTC)i can't remember the name of the cartoonist either, but i, too, constantly misread his name as "Ted Rall". heh. somebody should email Rall and tell him this bozo is giving him bad publicity by association. :)
although, to be perfectly fair, one of them did make me smile for a moment: it's the one in which the sales guy is saying "So, can we skip all these complaints and move on to the part where you renew your order?" it's only funny because i've had visits from that guy before, and only with great restraint prevented myself from hitting him.
and what's with the recent trend of "You could be missing a phone call right now!" software? do people often have problems with this? oh, i get it - it's marketed towards people who still use dialup, and would rather buy some sketchy software than suck it up and purchase a second phone line. heh.
