They didn't even get me a cake or a going-away card. Two and a half years and the only card I got was from Sandy, one of my favorite coworkers. She gave me a really nice gift, too. I was close to crying. Her husband had died very suddenly last year and it broke her heart.

It's over.

I go back to paying for services today, I'm told. Happy Candlemas.

I'm free. It's still not sinking in. It's like I'm waiting for a big surprise instead of a beautiful new day. I'm nervous that the IBM thing will be a prank pulled on me and I'm simply unemployed. Then I get a bunch of IBM mail and I realize "oh yeah, it's still good. The future begins!"

Now I'm in my cold apartment, trying to set the jumpers on a motherboard. Fun fun. Anyone wanna come over tomorrow? I was thinking of going to Binghamton tomorrow but I have waaaaaaaaaaay too much cleaning to do. No, really. I can't walk into my office without some gymnastics.

-gah but okay, Dante

Just so's you know, you rock six ways from Sunday.

(Also, my co-worker reads The Weekly Dig almost religiously, and thought that my knowing half of last week's "slag heap" was way cool.)

You gonna stay in touch with Sandy?

Every time I leave a job I end up falling out of touch with old co-workers, even the ones I enjoyed chatting with and hung out with outside of work hours. It's like they never existed.

Not that I'm much better at keeping up with other friends and acquaintances.

That's wrong, that they didn't even give you a card.

You are so totally going in the right direction. Let me know if you need anything. This offer will be more relevant in a week.
