Mayor Menino of Boston has declared a snow emergency. Not only has driving been banned but so has walking in the streets of Boston. Since it's 10 degrees Fahrenheit with winds 35 to 45 miles per hour and there are at least two feet snow that weren't around this time yesterday, that makes sense. I'm still working in the Internet Room of Arisia. We can't leave. Hundreds of geeks with Luxury Cabin Fever. You do the math on the Psychodrama Quotient (psy-Q, or psych-you).
The Internet Room is the water cooler of this convention. All sorts of folks come around to get data. We just found out Johnny Carson has died and we're passing that news around.
I lucked out this weekend. I had no cable modem service on Friday morning (the last time I was home) so I couldn't check the bus schedule in my neighborhood. So I drove to Oak Grove T stop, but they don't allow overnight parking. So I drove to Wellington T. Did you know their garage has a seventh floor? My car's there still. I'll have much less effort to clean it off.
We then got lucky with Internet access.
hakamadare, leader of the Net Room and brains of the operation, had to secure us connectivity when the person chosen to do that got busy. Haka being a genius and diplomat, we succeeded promptly. However, that was Thursday. On Friday, the hotel's entire Internet line got cut -- not a single room had connectivity except for the manager's office (which has a redundant T1 service). Haka then got us permission to use that trunk. Thus, this room on the fourth floor has been the only one with Net access for most of the convention.
I'd go on, but we need to rotate people around this room. I got a spare laptop working and people are going to use it. I'll tell more later when I'm not as tied up. I've learned a lot, I'm having a great time!
-one day it'll all be over, Ps/d

Date: 2005-01-24 02:15 am (UTC)I was going to put a thank you here for helping me with my wireless access, but now that you have prompted That Song to begin playing in my head again, I'm not so sure...Really, I hadn't realized the Internet room was such a social hot spot, next year I'll bring CDs and stay all weekend.

Date: 2005-01-24 03:13 am (UTC)Luckily some people have skis and some have snowshoes, so I guess it is ok for them to be shuffling around the streets, whooping it up and having fun! Today, I'm pleased to have windows overlooking a major thoroughfare; I've watched people intentionally doing 180 turns, playing in the snow, talking with strangers, and generally having a very laid-back wonderful day.
Glad to hear you are all doing great at the con. Geeks in a can; shake and enjoy! Drink some rocket fuel for me, eh? The original Smart Drink.
ps. Good foresite having your car covered. That will save you sooo much work.
