What I Like about the Modern Music World
May. 17th, 2010 12:14 amI no longer have to explain my musical tastes. I can like a lot of stuff all over the board and not have to hide a few references.
Perhaps this is a by-product of getting older. I'm no longer worried what people think about my taste. I'm the one eating it, after all. If you're in my car and you don't like what's on, feel free to flip through my iPod for me. After all, I loaded it with 6100 songs -- there's gotta be something you already know and something you don't know but you could like.
Steely Dan. I got turned onto them long after everyone in 1980 got "Hey Nineteen" earwormed. I was sort-of-dating a woman from Brooklyn and she got me hooked on them, Gary Lucas and (sniff) Jeff Buckley. Aja and Countdown to Ecstasy are such good albums -- the latter is earlier and has better storytelling, the former is technically precise in its composition on a level barely heard today let alone 1977.
Then I switch over to A. That's a band name. Actually, there are supposed to be flames coming out the back of the A but there isn't ASCII for that (maybe some deep Unicode). They're English guys doing California-style pop. There is a Speak-N-Math solo in the song Monkey Kong. You can't go wrong.
I lucked out this weekend when I scored some MP3s from
theloriest's roommate. Some belonged to an album I only have on tape, Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, a recording of the Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir from 1987. They work in polyharmonies and possibly with quarter tones to build haunting tones.
I was talking about all sorts of psychobilly and Denver scene alt-country bands with someone at the same party. There's nothing like 16 Horsepower's cover of Bad Moon Rising to make you re-evaluate packing your bags in fear of werewolves.
I have other stuff to report, such as having an excellent time on Saturday and needing copious sleep Sunday. However I'll just count my lucky stars and finish what little I need to do before work in the morning. I may get to ditch one of my heaviest burdens at the office (babysitting one customer every day) because it's clearly getting in the way of real work and it should be someone more important's problem.
My only major complaint about the last three days is that I've consistently had my sleep interrupted by weird noises in the street or the door bell. There's nothing lousier than being awakened after six and a half hours sleep, because I can't get back to sleep but I know I'll hit a brain slump a lot earlier than the end of the day. This happened a couple times on Sunday, which was the day I was trying to use for catch-up.
Meanwhile, I also scored some Animal Collective and I plan to try that while I type email. Maybe I'll cut it to a very few things done and sleep as soon as possible. I would love to be productive all day Monday.
