Fight back with slight Luddism
Feb. 24th, 2010 09:13 pmThis week a woman testified in front of Congress about her near-death experience with her Toyota. The engine started speeding up and the brakes refused to respond. The automatic transmission lever stopped responding as well, so slipping into neutral was not an option. The car went on for six miles before she got enough control of it to slow down and stop.
I'm sticking with driving stick. This stuff can't happen when I have mechanical control over gear engagement. I'll take all the other shiny, electronic gadgets but I still want to get the car out of gear when I order it. I also kinda like the default option being "stall". Oh, did I fuck up but no one has been harmed yet? Stall.
Then again... what if that woman was lying to Congress?
Now I'm suddenly thinking "Manuel the Tranny for President! Deep down, he's fabulous -- just like America."
I had to write that down or I'd think about it too much.
