Open Letter to the Swiss Confederation
Nov. 30th, 2009 09:59 pmCongratulations on becoming the future of racism.
People around the world used to see you as a paragon of diplomacy, neutrality and chocolate. I guess I'll have to stick with chocolate from Belgium, England, Italy, Mexico and Somerville.
I knew a few things about your racial inclinations. For example, you used to have three tiers of citizenship, one of which still wouldn't let a person vote. It's slightly better now. Then again, I'm an American so I am biased. I also feel that anyone that wants American citizenship can have it -- we stole the land, so who are we to declare limits on theft?
None of this is acceptable according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However, you aren't a member of the U.N. so no one can force you to do anything. Oh sure, the U.N. can't seem to enforce anything but it would be nice to know you felt guilty.
Nearly three fifths of your voting population declared it okay to ban the construction of minarets yesterday.
I fear you may be a belwether for the rest of Europe, even though you aren't a member of the EU. I'm not alone in this fear (sorry, I havent found any links in English), although the anglophone press is downplaying this possibility. Even the Wall Street Journal thinks this is nutty.
The UDC (the party behind this push) did a great job at marketing its agenda. This time it was far scarier than their attempt at legal racism from last year. Do they really think minarets are missiles and some woman in a burqa is going to launch them? If so, what is the target? I'm surprised they didn't show a lawn mower chopping down the minarets. Instead they're just thanking everyone for their vote.
You're bigots. Enjoy your toilet. I can't wait for more proselytic religions to show up.
