So I picked up a darling Mac PowerBook 1400 from [livejournal.com profile] lightfixer yesterday, along with a slot-1 dual CPU motherboard from [livejournal.com profile] zsquirrelboy. I was infatuated with the PowerBook, frankly.

It's starting to dawn on me that this computer has what I can only describe as write-only memory. It's the only Mac laptop I've seen that had no ethernet port of some sort. The older PowerBook I have even has one, but not this pup. It has a CD-ROM drive but no floppy drive. It runs OS 9.1, although that takes 24 of its 64 meg of RAM even when thinned out so I think OS 8.6 may be more suitable. It has two PCMCIA slots, but the two PCMCIA network cards I've tried don't have Mac drivers (the Xircom doesn't have drivers, which makes sense since they're now owned by Intel; the 3COM card simply won't load into the bay).

I tried to scavenge the ethernet port from the older laptop tonight, but I dread to report that I failed. I can get work done on this machine (it has a good battery so far), but I can only transfer that work elsewhere by sending it through the infrared port. That doesn't seem too practical so far -- I guess I'll have to use my Lego Mindstorm IR and COM1 on my normal computer. That seems very silly. It may still be a fun way to play with a very cute computer.

With the luck I've had with this laptop, I'll be pleased to get any response from the dual-CPU mobo. I've become too fascinated with hardware and missed the point of getting any work done with it. Perhaps putzing with Motorolas should not be my goal. Intel has borne fruit; perhaps I shall find more when I slap this NIC into the future Linux laptop I've borrowed from my cousin. Yes, that's a task I can complete. Thus, I should.

I used to have a PB 5300, possibly the worst machine ever manufactured by anybody. At any rate, it didn't have ethernet, so I ended up with a Global Village PCMCIA card that worked quite handily. Despite all its flaws, I actually loved my powerbook. Might want to see if you can Ebay one o' those...
