I got laid off yesterday. You probably heard that 72 of IBM's Massachusetts employees got the resource action information and I am one.
Believe it or not, I'm happy. I'm not mad at my employer, freaked out or anything. I realize I have the skills to become a Unix system administrator after two and a half years working these machines and reproducing interesting problems. I've built an impressive tool set, much of which is portable and marketable. I am ready to hunt for a cool new task.
I'll miss my fellow employees but I've had the chance to say goodbye to everyone. In fact I'm still an employee until 29 June. then I get four weeks of full pay severance after that. The company is focused on helping me to get a new position, so I get to use the time at work to develop my CV and hunt for jobs.
How does this affect my vacation to Australia? It'll probably make jet lag easier to avoid. I paid way too much for the tickets not to go. Also, I'll likely find a job fast once I get back and have no vacation time after that. Why not immerse myself in a full, decadent and interesting vacation from my world? I'm going and I'm not skimping. Then I still have two days of work when I get back.
So yes, I'm putting feelers out. Who would like to talk to me about their corporate IT problems and how I may be able to help?
