Report from Long Island
Aug. 14th, 2004 11:23 amI was on a rooftop in Brooklyn last night. I could see Manhattan at this odd angle where it barely looked like a city I knew and mostly looked like Boston crashed into Syracuse. The cranes in the Red Hook Terminal looked like knockoffs of the Bunker Hill Bridge, while the BQE rolled off into the flats like 690 heading to the Fairgrounds. The Jehovah's Witness Watchtower looked like the Custom House Tower, which solidified a thought I was having that all cities are actually one single city projecting itself randomly. Then again, my head wasn't straight.
It's good to catch up with friends. It blew my mind to learn that none of the three close friends I was with had ever heard of Homestarrunner. Perhaps I spend too much time surfing and not enough writing.
One thing I wish to work on in the next few months is ramping up my artistic productivity. I have thus concluded that I will finish building the new computer I've been sitting on for two months. I will get the Pot Sherd restarted, which will require me to find all the email addresses and figure out who is alive.
The roof was breathtaking. It's amazing to be in a very quiet, open-air spot in the middle of metropolis. Talking to friends made me realize I've been afraid of my own creativity and should spend the next few years writing and recording audio. I need to begin again. I have most of the tools already...
Meanwhile, 40 bands will be playing at Randall's Island today (the island underneath the Triboro Bridge), including Big Star and the Stooges. It's a "Dante's tape collection revival". I sooooooooooo want to go cuz I'm right frickin' near it but I didn't come to NYC for that. I came to get perspective. I have friends to see (and one to call since she lost my number).
I just wanted to post before my host woke up. Y'all have a good one!
