pseydtonne: Behold the Operator, speaking into a 1930s headset with its large mouthpiece. (Default)
beneath my desk sits an amazing device. It will soon be hooked not to a monitor but the television. It can go from from off to login prompt in 52 seconds. It's nothing new as hardware goes but it's downright amazing to me. I have named it Seeburg. You know, as in the chrome-laden juke boxes of yore.

I finished my Gentoo install on this dual-Celeron box last night. I expected horrors when I rebooted. Instead, I was at a login screen in a flash. I'm amazed, frankly. It doesn't mind the small power supply I put in it, which means leaving it on for days or weeks won't be a problem. It doesn't have issues. It also doesn't have any applications yet -- it's a wee bairn of what it will be. However, it can stand up.

This is the first time I compiled a kernel that didn't have problems. I made one once on Maggie's machine (when it was still a WinME dual-boot) but it had the wrong USB settings. This time, I'm pleased. I feel secure in the progress I can make with this project.

I hope to have some platters on deck by the end of the week. I'm tired of the same MP3s. This box is perfect for a retro revival -- lots of shiny things on the front, a 50s name, and even an internal Zip 250 drive just for the geek-near-retro touch.
