Shiny aluminum box with plastic front
Apr. 20th, 2004 10:55 amWhile I was at the MIT Flea, I picked up an aluminum computer case for $50. This thing probably would have cost $150-$200 in the store. It is a lovely case -- it has a clear plastic front (lucite, I think) and all of its front panel covers. It also has audio input and output jacks, two USB jacks and a Firewire jack, all on the front. It's all thumbscrews for the panels on the sides and the PCI slots, although there are six giant flat-head screws for the plastic front panel. It came with a giant rear fan and a normal front fan. It's light, cold and shiny -- born to host an overclocker.
It lacked two things: a power supply (so I took one from the box I'm going to ditch) and mounting holes in all ATX places. You see, motherboards have standardized locations for screws to go into them and thereby lock the motherboard safely onto the back plane of the case. This one looks like someone got the template for an ATX motherboard, drill some holes in the right places at the top, then got drunk somewhere in the middle and got belligerent by the end. Last night I was cleaning the case and futzing with install while watching TV. I finally caught up on The L Word, which gets a lot better by the later episodes. Once they've laid (heh) all the characters out, it's a lot easier getting them to interact and change. Well written television is valuable. I assumed there'd be an episode 13, but Maggie says that 12 really is the last one. Strange way to cliffhang...
Then guess what was on? Three episodes of Strangers with Candy (the cult two-parter and one about rich girl shoes) and the "Little Donny" episode of Upright Citizens Brigade. Comedy Central is strictly to blame for my going to bed at four. I went to bed so late that Maggie was waking up and we talked a little. It was good.

(sad thing is, that was a Life in Hell strip; perhaps the failure of this case's maker to listen is why the case was $50 and I'm searching for buffer buttons)
