I drove a little out of my way this morning to learn that America will have its advantage on me while I'm out of the country. The White Stripes' new album comes out June 19th, the dead center of my vacation.

Background: I listen to WBCN on Wednesday and Friday nights because they've got Robbie Roadsteamer. He's this kid who has a band, Roadsteamer. They play up being north shore semi-delinquents (the Boston equivalent of Long Island louts). It's a wicked awesome live show complete with keytar from the Eighties.

Robbie can't put a cork in it to save his life. Of course I dig him immensely and I know [livejournal.com profile] fangirl715 does too cuz she turned me on to him.

Otherwise I can't normally take that station. It's borderline tolerable: how many late-era Chili Peppers songs can you take? Sometimes they drop a better one in the mix: for a few minutes it's not 1993. That was the case this morning.

I turned over my car and BCN came on. Actually what came on was this signing tirade about "you can't be a pimp and a prostitute too". I was going to argue when I realized I was involved in a song and it wasn't coming from a college station. I had to know what it was.

It turned out this was a track from the new White Stripes album. The guy on the air was comparing it to a few bands from the Seventies and then whipped out his ace: a mashup up the song with "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath. It worked beautifully!

I wanted this album immediately. I decided to drive to the nearest record store (Newbury Comics in Fresh Pond) and grab a copy.

As I was sitting in traffic I flicked stations and found the MIT station, WMBR, was playing an instrumental track from the upcoming Rush album. I knew that would not be out until next month but I figured I'd get the dates while I'm picking up the White Stripes album.

I got there just as Newbury Comics opened. Guess what? No album yet.

Anyone have a fave place to scam an album?
