I've done a buttload of research and have come up with the following vague plan:

  1. Leave Boston Tuesday morning, June 12th. Take the bus to Davis, Red Line to South Station, Sivler Line to Terminal C, fly out on United to SFO. Sleep on that plane because 11 am EDT is 1 am in Sydney.
  2. Take the BART to Civic Center, meet up with my uncle and [livejournal.com profile] bluepapercup somehow. I will be downtown by 3 or 3:30 pm if that helps.
  3. Ride a cable car and/or a MUNI streetcar, get sushi. I love sushi. Y'know, unless there is something more interesting to eat.
  4. Book back to the airport and get on the zomg long flight.
  5. Land in Sydney Thursday morning. Suffer amazing jet lag. Pick one out of the hundred hostels based on smell and proximity to interesting food. Stay until Monday.
  6. Take the train to Canberra. See that.
  7. Rent a car one-way to Melbourne. I found a deal on that.
  8. Drive to the capey bits, wind up back in Melbourne, ditch car and ride trolleys.
  9. Fly back to Sydney at least one day before I fly back to Ameristania.
  10. Leave Sydney Tuesday afternoon (26 June); arrive in LAX Tuesday morning. Huzzah time travel!
  11. Prove I'm an American again, get luggage, drag my ass to another terminal, sleep on the plane to Boston.
  12. Spend the 27th in my bed or at Diesel, whichever irks me less.
Comments? By the way, I quit coffee again. It's been 48 hours. I hadn't planned it out, although i expected the headaches today and they were yesterday instead.

Re the Silver Line: Don't take it unless you have a bunch of time built in to the schedule. See rant: http://bedfull-o-books.livejournal.com/21517.html.

Take the Blue line, or there is a bus from South Station (free if you have a monthly T pass.)

Christ, if you have the money, just take a taxi.

Which is what I ended up doing, yes. $30 from South Station to the airport. It's about that from my home, too. (We was robbed, but we was also desperate.)

T is for suck.....

I'm a T junkie. I planned my vacation around the idea that I would use as many forms of mass transit as possible. If I'm successful, my Transit stacker will nearly double in size. Seeing as this has been my hang-up since the age of nine, no failure has abated it.

Oh, and I hate taxis. I drive like a pro and refuse to pay someone else to drive poorly.

In contrast, I've had a lot better luck with the silver line than the blue. I did test runs on the silver line to the airport last year, before I flew to England. I found it was easier even if it took longer. I then used it for the trip to the airport and back and had a very smoth experience.

Here are the facts about taking the blue line versus silver from my house on the Somerville/Medford line:

  • It's a three block walk from my house to catch the bus to Davis. Then I can cross the street, go downstairs and take one subway line to the silver line. The silver line goes directly to the airpot terminals. Thus my lug distance is far shorter, even though the train time to downtown is longer.
  • If I want to catch the blue line, I'd have to change trains twice (even though it's only the green line one stop). Then I'd have to haul my stuff down the big stairs to catch yet another mode of transit.
  • The blue line is crowded during the rush hour, which is when I'm leaving for the airport. The silver line is never crowded.
  • I have a place to put my bags while I'm on the silver line.
That's my thinking. It's all about schlep avoidance. Then again I have the drag bag now so it won't be so bad. I'd still rather save my walking for running around airports in a frenzy.

I'm bringing a sweater but that's all. Their idea of cold is "it was 16C today!" Total wusses. I can hardly wait.

To encourage you to sleep on that flight, you should probably not sleep the night before. At least that was what I would do in order to fight off the jet lag.

Also I hate to be a downer, yet did you also consider current security standards at airports for your flight? Last I checked, international flights require people to show up two hours before takeoff.

I've had to consider that for the San Francisco leg of it. However my flight out of Boston is domestic and not international since I'm only flying to San Francisco on that leg. I'm flying out of United's domestic terminal at Logan (terminal C) and not the International Terminal (Terminal E). I've been through security on both terminals and C is easier just because it's shorter.

I plan to leave the house around 7:45 a.m. and catch the #94 to Davis. The bus ride is ten minutes. Then it's about half an hour to South Station and another 20 minutes on the silver line to terminal C. I did this before when I flew to Austin through the same terminal.
