A poorly played checkmate
Sep. 30th, 2006 10:22 amI logged onto my Dreamscape shell account this morning. The message of the day had been updated for the first time in 5 years: "Regrettably, we will no longer provide Unix shell account services after October 20th, 2006."
The message goes on to mention a free shell account provider I could check out. They have so few users of their shell account (it may just be me) that it's not practical for them anymore.
I guess that's really it. Now I'm only going to be able to get that email via a normal POP3 client. All the benefits I had are going away. It's time to get that mail server going.
It's also time to call them on Monday and let them know I will not be renewing my annual subscription because I'm not paying ten bucks a month for three megabytes of POP3 storage when I get far more from Gmail with the same level of dependability.
-time to update my email address on LJ, Dante

Date: 2006-10-01 02:30 am (UTC)no, i'm under the impression that he desires to read mail using Pine; as such, i doubt that would be an acceptable solution.
alas, i hesitate to post information about free as in beer shell accounts, as i am loath to dissuade
pseydtonne from pursuing his mail server project. btw, boyo, do you actually have the necessary hardware in hand at present? how are the montagnards doing?

Date: 2006-10-02 10:44 pm (UTC)ya can just run pine on yer local box...
(alternatively, you could run a pop3 fetchmail and use pine locally; not sure how sending would work, but probably kludgeable...)
