  1. BSD-based Unix is noticeably different from Linux, which is System-V centric. The BSD folks get militant about using C-based shells. I'm not a C coder, so C-based shells aren't intuitive the way Bourne-based shells are. I broke my teeth on C shell then tcsh, but I never felt comfy until I sat down at a bash prompt the first time. Suddenly I had a shell that realize I was here to administer, not to preach.
  2. If you want to make a splash screen for Grub, it needs to be 640x480 pixels with only fourteen colors in XPM picture format compressed with gzip. I knew all of those things a couple months ago. What I didn't realize is how different XPM is from JPEG. If you don't play with the colors in XPM format, you will have no idea what your picture will look like. Thus, convert to XPM before you posterize a future splash screen.
  3. Geeking takes energy.
  4. You can sometimes sleep three quarters of a day and still need a nap.
