Uhh... what the subject line said.

I'm happy. I'm sated. I'm also addicted to quince paste, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rscott. I can't let myself have much of that stuff but it's sure delicious.

I'm psyched to be getting [livejournal.com profile] moominmolly's old laptop this week. This is the very laptop she used to report from her amazing journey with [livejournal.com profile] ceelove from Maine to California by bicycle in the summer of 2001. If you've never checked out Intrepid Heroines, don't delay. It's the kind of tale that makes you say "I want to do things!"

I've really been wanting an Intel-based laptop that's modern enough to watch the Strongbad email. The laptop I'm typing on is a Mac. It's kinda old -- I don't think it'll take to Tiger (MacOS X.4) once that's available. I can't upgrade it anymore without spending far more than its resale value. I've already paid as much to fix this laptop as I had when I bought it used. I like this laptop a lot -- enough so that I'm seriously considering buying a PowerBook in the summer. I get so much more work done on this laptop than any other machine simply because I can use it anywhere I want to sit. I open the lid and it's working. I don't have to wait for it to cycle up -- it finds a wireless connection in less than five seconds. However, it can barely load a picture-heavy web page, let alone the luscious Google Maps.

By the way, have you played with Google Maps? Totally do it. It's getting some Canadian parts now. You can pass it any two American airport handles and it'll draw the map connecting them. (However, it still can't parse YYZ so it's not yet a Rush fan.) A coworker was showing me a couple tricks it has: you can move west a screenful at a time by hitting the Home button on the keyboard (or east with the End button); you can use the arrow keys to slide around without stopping (say, you want to follow a road while zoomed in); you can zoom in with + or out with -; you can find any Yellow Pages business type in an area (say, a restaurant supply shop or a gym). The maps aren't bitmaps -- they seem to be some kind of postscript or Bezier. They render wicked fast. You can spend all day riding a road or two. It's seductive. Oh, and did I mention it can work with your GPS to help you find yourself?

So yeah, I want a modern laptop. For now, I will use a recent enough laptop that I can learn more about getting a smooth rendition of Linux on a Pentium-centric laptop (power savings support, good screen renders). Then I will have enough hands-on knowledge to say what is worth paying a lot of money to get new. Evolution, eh? Besides, Molly's laptop is already a Linux box -- my giving it a fresh life is keeping it in a strong tradition. In fact, I may find that I don't need a newer laptop after I get used to hers. Only time can tell.

I'm going to bed. Farewell and adieu to [livejournal.com profile] graciana's fine LJ. In her honor I shall sign off.

-et c'est tous, Dante
