On Saturday I went to brunch. It was good to see [livejournal.com profile] hakamadare and a lot of others. After his advice, I'm going to try Freevo instead of MythTV.

Then I had to run to Brookline to help a former co-worker transfer his files to a new computer. I bought him some RAM (can you believe a 2.4GHz machine running XP Home would come with only 128 mb RAM and let the bios steal 8 mb for a built-in video card? That's crippling.) and swapped him the 512-mb stick for his old computer.

His old machine is a Compaq Presario EZ 2200. This was designed to be an "Internet station" -- it has an LED on the front to tell you whether you have email waiting, it has an LCD clock on the front (to help you see how long you've been connected to your dial-up account or to see what time it is), and it's shaped like a 1950s toaster. This thing is fuqyng cute! Some of the features are dated but not useless. It's also difficult to mod other than adding PCI cards, RAM or a new drive because of its special form. If the power supply ever dies, that's it for the box.

The computer itself is running a 500 MHz celeron. it had 192 mb RAM but I'm going to up that if it can handle it. I'm going to put a bigger drive on it and turn it into Show Catcher, my dedicated tivo-esque object and mp3 server. Yes, that's this week's project. I need to get a PCI video card for it (no AGP slot) that has an S-video output (I saw one for $80) so that I can hook it to my TV. Heck, it even matches the GameCube's eggplantish color.

I saw Dresden Dolls open for Rasputina in Providence on Saturday with [livejournal.com profile] lightfixer and [livejournal.com profile] penghuin (I don't know that Penguin has an LJ, so I'll use his pseudonym and leave it at that) (update: thank you, [livejournal.com profile] dilletante!). I had a great time, and Dresden Dolls completely stole the show. That drummer is so disciplined yet has so much fun.

Sunday I ran some errands in the early afternoon. When I got back, it was just shy of three and the sky was simply glowering but hadn't burst. When I walked outside at 5 pm, everything was covered in a fresh few inches of snow. Then is why I didn't see the ice patch and I fell on my right arm around the elbow.

Yes, I'm still sore. Driving stick isn't too painful, but cutting the prime rib at the office party became a chore. Oh yeah, there was an office party. Karaoke. Oh, and I won a wireless router.

When I got home, I used my wounded arm to lean up. Thank you, Midol. I took out the recycling, cleaned off the dining table and some of the living room, and watched Adult Swim.

[livejournal.com profile] chaggalagirl bought me a Magna Doodle! I'd seen ads for this thing years ago but didn't know they still existed. I played with one for the first time about a month ago when we visited her cousins in Manchester. If you've never seen one, it's a magnetic stylus that you move across a field of magnetized powder packets. it gives you strange halftone control. It's also a great toy for killing time in front of the TV.

1) - Magna Doodles ROCK! My sister had one when we were little and I used to steal it from her because it was SO COOL!

2) - It was great seeing you at brunch on Saturday! After finals (or after Christmas) we should all hang out.
