All sorts of sadness for kitties I know

It's been a heavy week:

• I've had a monster cold -- first it was a sore throat and post-nasal drip, but then it slammed into stuffed sinuses, lungs full of phlegm, and Eustachian tubes having a party. I took Wednesday off from work and also veged plenty on my day off (Thursday). I feel a lot better now and I've worked wicked hard to catch up at work.
• Maggie and I (Maggie, really) were taking care of my coworker's cats while he and his wife were away at Pennsic. One of the cats died.
• Last night my cousin called me all sorts of hyped up about wanting to go to the MIT Flea to get stuff. I wasn't too keen on it because I need bookcases right now -- I have nowhere to put the stuff I already own. But hey, it's my cousin so I went to bed early and prepared for a heavy morning. Then my cousin called around 3 AM crying -- her oldest cat had died in the night.

What can just one goof do about kitties reaching Nirvana? Oh yes, both were mature kitties but it's still sad. I tried to write some stuff last night but I wound up deleting it. Speaking of which:

• I guess I really corrupted the data on my main Linux machine. It was trying to download the mail when Evolution hung. I went looking at processes and found X was bloated -- what, from just being on for a few days? I can't recall whether I shut down properly, but I don't think I did. Now I'm getting mega error messages about nonrecoverable inodes and error status 59 and all sorts of scary hard drive messages. The drive itself is fine -- the Win98 side works without a problem. I need someone to help me recover my work, then I'll reinstall from scratch.
• It turns out even Windows XP Home Edition is beyond my grasp. I went to my boss's cousin's house to fix a "browser problem." It turns out XP Home does not allow you to uninstall Internet Explorer, even when you think you have. I worked for five hours and still couldn't solve the problem. That's a lousy OS, man.

Any bored geeks in the house? I could use coaching.

Maggie and I need to get a bookshelf -- a big one. Where to go...

That would imply that all cats are boddhisattvas. Which, if I bought Buddhist metaphysics, would seem plausible.
