I'm heading up to Montreal for a couple days. I'll be hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] lightcastle as much as he can tolerate (break out your stop watches, eh) and bringing him back to Boston.

I'll also be shopping for stuff I can't find here. My roommate would like a container of croutons de veau (it's supposed to be like tuna salad but with veal instead) and spruce beer. [livejournal.com profile] hakamadare needs a decent copy of the dico Robert. I suspect each used book store on St-Denis is going to see me.

I'm listening to CBC Radio One out of Montreal this morning. This is the premier radio channel for one of the largest cities in a major nation and the announcer has blown way too much time talking about his shaving cream bottle exploding on him this morning. He just got back from two weeks in Cuba -- I guess he wanted to avoid Americans for a little while.

I'll never get over the idea of Westerners vacationing in Cuba while Castro is still alive. They can't even get new cars! Oh sure, you see all of those pics of gorgeous 1950s cars but just think how hard it must be to keep the air conditioning working, how few seat belts there are... I guess it's as close as any non-American can get to visiting North Korea.

I've been having fun with something mundane: PB&J. I picked up a jar of low-sugar strawberry preserves and was happy to find giant chunks of strawb throughout. I've been putting this on top of Teddy chunky (a local peanut butter where you have to mix the oil back in from the top but dang i' vaut la peine) on rye bread. Ah, simple pleasures.

I get out of here at 8:30 today, since I pulled extra hours during the weekend. Yay! I'm looking forward to a diner breakfast of eggs and... frankly, it's the eggs.

Teddy peanut butter's great. They used to serve it at the elementary school I attended.

Stuff you can find in Montreal but not here: decent acid. Hydro. If you weren't crossing a border I'd give you a shopping list. :\

Teddy chunky is a protein staple of mine. Mixing the oil back in is the only arm workout I get these days.

Holler when you guys are on your way back!

I'm there now. It's quarter to four in the morning and I'm in a hostel downtown.

Very obvious chunky/oily PB hack: store it upside-down. A lot easier to mix back together that way. Not very intuitive, hadn't thought of it before someone else told me...
