I have feet?
Oct. 11th, 2007 02:16 pmI went into town yesterday to hang out with an old friend from Comcast. He knew about a dim sum joint on Essex Street upstairs from another restaurant. Man, that was a good find.
After we walked all over downtown, I caught the train to Kendall Square and wound up flipping through geek books at the MIT Coop. It's a good place to sit and avoid street noise for a couple hours when you haven't thought of anything else. That's when I got a cal from
oneagain asking me to come to swing dancing that evening. They were offering classes before the dance, so I wouldn't feel like a total newb. I was only a few blocks from that location, so I accepted.
I had a very good time and I didn't expect that. In fact I'm going again tomorrow night. I realized I had rhythm without a problem after years of noodling with tunes. Then I realized I could get the six-step thing right by saying "west coast (taps on the left foot), east coast (taps on the right foot), rock step (also on right foot but it moves back and forth)" in the beat. Suddenly time flies.
Later I wound up with the Dismemberment Song "Academy Award" in my head. That became the rhythm as I practiced the foot work. "The acad-emy a-ward for embar-assing mello-drama goes-to YOU so get-on up-there-an' give-us a-speech!" I liked that with two rounds of six-step, I could get everything back on to the one when the peak word "you" comes around.
It's overcast again today but I'm thinking about going for a long walk. I have plans for the weekend and a second interview Monday but I think it would be good to get my body moving.
