my Dreamscape email works again
Jul. 19th, 2006 10:41 amAs if I did not have enough evidence that these guys were not as competent as they used to be, I learned it in spades in the last 24 hours. I dealt with four different people, only one of whom knew how to toggle the lock on my account and propagate that change through the system. This same person admitted he hadn't used pine in years, but I'll forgive him.
I have my own extrapolation of what happened. Their lockout script not only tracks whether my inbox is beyond 30 megabytes (yes, really) but whether the Webmail account is beyond a 10 MB limit. This means their web mail software creates a separate directory and compares its contents to the real inbox upon execution. I had only touched the WebMail account once in August of 2004, when I had a full account as well. Thus it was full of email from 2004 but nothing newer.
When I had hit my limit before, the lockout script did not take the Webmail directory into consideration; now it does. I didn't even know Webmail had a separate directory, so I had no idea to clean it.
I had them close the Webmail account (at least I hope it's closed: if I log into it to check it out, it will recreate the account). I didn't even remember it existed, but it's good to close that loop hole.
Now it's time to close the final loop hole. I will not be renewing my Dreamscape account, which would normally happen in February. I have six months to build a mail server and get it running. Almost any old machine could do the job -- the quieter and least power-draining the better. It will only handle mail so that it does not need to be interrupted.
I think I found a use for that 880 MB solid state laptop drive I bought. Let's hope it works.
