Got me ta thinkin'
Dec. 24th, 2002 01:29 amI read a link to a link and wound up thinking about Richard Linklater's movie from last year, Waking Life. I like Linklater's movies a lot, although I find it very hard to explain why. When I showed Dazed and Confused to
epanastatis and
gazebogrrl they cringed. Granted, it's a stoner flick (and a gateway flick to harder Linklater works).
I wish I had more time to work on my creative voice. Perhaps the only way to get time is simply to make it -- I should get back to posting email journals on a schedule, instead of letting whimsy dictate their release. The technology works; I'm simply not using it.
Part of me enjoys the tinkering, but another part wants me to use the tinkered to make things. Building tools is not the same as knowing how to use them. I can write, and a 400 MHz computer with nearly half a gig of RAM and two operating systems is more than enough computer to get some writing done. So why do I always want to build a more powerful machine?
The point of Waking Life is that we make whatever we want out of the reality we are in. Granted, this sounds a lot more like the Seth books than anything solid. Perhaps a more basic approach is also the point: all the time I spend worrying about the stuff I should be doing is wasted time. If I just get that stuff done, I will trade the worry time for productive time.
I should not be dismissive of the Seth books, either. If we are only as locked in our bodies as we let ourselves be, then freedom is merely a matter of learning how to see. Then again, Francis Dunnery is a big fan of the Seth books and he still hasn't had a hit. I still like his tunes.
Happy Decemberween, folks. I'm heading to Utica tomorrow and Rochester Wednesday. I have to remind myself why I left.
