pseydtonne: Behold the Operator, speaking into a 1930s headset with its large mouthpiece. (Default)
I let Windows 98 reformat and reinstall. For some reason, it kept the weird disk partitions and the larger drive size. This means my dad will now have a fully-functioning computer, circa 1998, with a modern word processor (AbiWord) and a CD-ROM drive. Woooo! It's like the dot-com bust never happened! 64 megs of RAMming fury!

I named the computer Palermo and the C:\ drive Sfingi. I should explain: I was born on Saint Joseph's Day. The traditional Italian foods for that feat are desserts -- sfingi and zeppole. Zeppole looks likea brioche, but it's really a pastry shell with powdered sugar on top and a huge hunk of custard inside. I can never remember what sfingi is, cuz I can never find any.

Anyway, when I was born, the old timers sitting around the waiting room (or somewhere... maybe it was a bar) saying "if he's born on Saint Joseph's, maybe Frank (my dad) will name him Joseph."

My dad pre-empted their talk by putting a huge grin on his face and saying "maybe I'll name him SFIN-GIIIIIIII!"

So here's my tip of the hat to my dad. May it still work after I teach him how to use it.

I am so pumped, by the way, that it works. Goal!
