I need to get back to sleep. I just finished divvying up the bill with the hotel so that I could leave this afternoon and the gentleman I split the room with could stay on through Monday without getting grief about the bill. They could only generate two days' worth of bill but they could put 75% of that bill on my card and 25% on his. This way, he pays for 100% of tomorrow but we divided the net bill in half. Ah, math.
The view from this window is pretty cool at night. I had forgotten to get my camera back from the person borrowing it, so I have no photos. I shall make do with my tale as it evolves over the next few posts.
Atlanta looks like a larger Pittsburgh. Since it has no rivers to centralize the city (well, it does but I can't find 'em) the downtown sits on a series of hills.
This is one of the few places where neighborhoods with names have specific definitions. Midtown is right next to downtown but downtown has no housing and midtown... looks oddly like midtown Rochester. I felt comfortable as a result: the city unfolded around me with odd labels for streets but a decent enough logic.
I want to tell a fast story before I close this, as I started writing before I napped and now I wish to leave the hotel for some food. The subway reminds me of Montreal's but the tokens remind me of Boston (expect the price is $1.75). There are also more panhandlers and sundry. When I went to one of the token machines yesterday to purchase a return token, a guy was standing at the machine saying "need a token?" I gave him seven quarters and he handed me what looked like a token. However, instead of seeing "Always Coca-Cola with Marta" on the front, I saw "20 cent euro". The coin was the same shape, heft and color as the subway token in my other pocket but it had carved ridges on the edges.
"Wait, this works as a slug?" I asked.
"Uh huh..." he muttered s he evaporated back into a corner. I just paid 14 bits for a coin worth two bits on a trading floor. Then I flipped the coin over and got hung up on the mandala of the Portuguese coin. I was not going to use it for a slug because now I had my own Executive Decision Maker! So yeah, Atlanta is very international.
Actually, I like it here. I look forward to visiting again.
