Enough whining, more geeking!
May. 14th, 2005 08:41 amThe last write-up looks snotty now. I mean, it's damn funny but I wish I'd had a better word than "hippy" on hand. "Slacker" and "deadhead wannabe" are much better suggestions. However, that discussion is no longer pressing.
First I'd like to provide a quick report about my debt. It's officially below $650 as of today (more likely Wednesday, when NTB cashes the check I mailed today). I didn't even wait to pay it when it came in the mail: I wrote the check, shoved it in the enclosed envelope, licked and sealed said envelope, put a stamp on that very same envelope, and shoved this illustrious envelope in my satchel... on Wednesday. Then I went "d'oh!" and shoved it in the mail box this evening. My plan to be at zero debt by the end of June is exactly on schedule.
I haven't been home a lot. I keep avoiding being home. It's too quiet. I did this before and I'm doing it again. I've had some other revelations, most of which lead me to believe I need to figure out what I don't want so that I can figure out what I want. Money is no longer an issue but that only means I either want larger things (such as a mortgage) or sillier things that cost more (such as a solid-state hard drive). Killing desire is vital here.
I started writing this around twenty of nine last night. Then I got distracted and surfed for a few minutes. Then I watched some Strongbad emails. Then one of the guys in frockcoats from Dark City must've snuck up on me and said "sleep." I woke up at 6:30.
Oh, so one last thought before I resume my morning geek research: I would like to become an RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer). While Red Hat is not my favorite Linux distro, it's the only one offering a vouched cert for future geek endeavors. I would like to pick the brains of anyone already holding one of these certs (
hakamadare, poke poke) about a preferred approach, stuff you wish you'd known before you took the exam, should I go for the RHCT first, et cetera. I still suck at writing shell scripts but I know how to get machinery going. I would rather pass the first time and not have to pay to take the fuqhur again.
