Why am I even admitting this? I dunno. We all had fits around 7 pm at the office. The phone queue was jammed but every call was the same. "How much does it cost after the first month? Oh, I'll call back then."

If you live in New England and you see billboards about... err, Kumquats... just realize that this is not a rival to AT & Love. It ate AT&Love. Did you owe three hundred bucks in back cable bills to Medium Juan but never paid? You still owe it, just to Kumquats. Don't think we're psychics because we know your name from your address. Mounties always find their man, and creditors always find their dough.

No, I don't understand why cable is a monopolistic system in 99% of the nation. I live in one of the few towns where it isn't. This doesn't mean the cost of cable will suddenly go down under new management. I will tell you what we always hear from the bosses: the cost of broadcasting live baseball is probably the biggest reason cable rates go up each year. Original programming, even when it sucks, cost money. Advertising takes up more air time each year, but it doesn't swallow all of the cost.

"I only want a few channels." You want the same ten channels everybody else wants. No one calls the cable company and says "could I just get QVC and that infomercial channel?" Some people like sports and some people like documentaries, some people like nature shows and some people want television that replicates drug states. None of this shit is free.

Then again, what's the hottest-selling product at the cable company? Cable modem. It gives you exactly what you want -- pr0n. Oh, and your LiveJournal. MTV used to sell itself; one too many Hype Williams videos and now we'd rather listen to MP3s.

The phone company is no longer a monopoly; in turn, long-distance phone calls cost about 2% of what they did twenty years ago. The cable company provides local phone service. Healthy, all-American competition! Great stuff.

Don't get mad when I try to schedule your appointment. Don't act shocked that adding HBO costs that much. Don't pretend Hertical the Wacky Phone Company has your best interests at heart -- ask your parents what it was like getting a single phone line installed in 1975.

I still sold a decent amount of stuff today. I have no idea how certain guys sold three times what I sold today. I suspect they go into selling rages and crash hard. Sales can make you lose your senses -- you get obsessed with your monetary goals so readily that you forget to dot your i's, cross your t's, realize you didn't really close that last sale.

How can 90 minutes on a phone turn me from a happy dude to a raving lunatic? Why didn't the previous 4 hours do that? This conversion month is rough because it's confusing a lot of people, employees included. I'm looking forward to sleeping in on Thursday.

Who knows... maybe some year Kumquats will structure standard cable like some of our old digital packs (Sports and Information, Family and Variety, Movies and Music).

When I have a bad hour or three of a lot of junk, I turn off the phone, walk around for five minutes and think about... well, my thoughts are private in this case, but I go back to the phone refreshed just by the fact that I an turn it off. L. won't mind if you do that - she wants you to sell more stuff too, and getting your brain back from toejam-eating-zombie-customers is a good means of selling more.
