pseydtonne: Behold the Operator, speaking into a 1930s headset with its large mouthpiece. (Default)
Yesterday my landlady stopped by. She finally had the asking price for this apartment to go condo. Two hundred twelve thousand dollars for 600 square feet in Melrose. Oh, I'd get the deal of probably one ninety. However, I'd have to ask the agent what the monthly condo fees would be.

I bluffed my way through the conversation. The whole time she was talking I was thinking "but I love this apartment. Then again, it's a fortress. Staying here has been keeping me in state. I need to rejoin society. I should be able to walk out my door and into Somerville. I suppose that means living either in Somerville, Medford or Arlington."

I've taken a cursory look at Craig's List. I felt very traitorous looking at other apartments when I still love this one. However, there is a renter's market in Boston for the first time in a while and I could come out ahead.

Moving will help clear out the demons I still have from this apartment being "the one Maggie found". I really like this place. However, [livejournal.com profile] hakamadare made a good point to me: if you buy property, expect to stay at least five years. If I stay in this apartment another five years, I'll get more gnarled and caught in my own machinations. I need to rejoin the world. What better way than living in it?

My timeline is slow. However, I'd like to get something lined up for November. I'd like hardwood floors, at least one bedroom, a gas stove and off-street parking. Any advice?

-no really I'm asking, Dante
