pseydtonne: Behold the Operator, speaking into a 1930s headset with its large mouthpiece. (Default)
Okay, you know that laptop I keep whining about? The 75-megahertz NEC that belongs to my cousin and I keep saying "I'm going to install Linux on it after the Moon aligns with Detroit and sausages fall from the trees"? It's running Debian 3.0 and it's working. It boots from the hard drive.

I've named it Palimpsest. This word refers to parchment or wax tablet that has been scraped for reuse but you can still see the old writing on it. I can still see the "capable of Windows 95" sticker that has yellowed almost to nothing. However, the computer is now a functional work box for lazy times on the futon. I can read text-based pr0n, write code, and even... umm... well... copy crap off of it to compile on my regular computer.

I didn't do only geek things today, though. I washed and dried three loads of laundry, changed the water and washed the bowls for all three of our betta fish (Ceru, err... the other one, and the one that tried to jump into the sink drain), did a bunch of dishes, and cooked half of dinner. I didn't get dressed or anything, but it was still a fine day. The sun came out. I wasn't at work, so the sun being out was not a threat to my sales performance (a sunny weekend in summer means the phones don't ring and I have to fight a lot of beach traffic to get t work).

Trio is having a month of shows about controversial comics. They had a two-hour special about Mort Sahl, a comedian I've liked since I was a kid. My dad had some of his albums and I picked up a few others as I got older. He was really the first modern observational satirist. Well, except for Will Rogers (one had a lasso, the other had a rolled up newspaper). I had no idea he'd been so shunned back in the mid-60s for helping the New Orleans investigations into the Kennedy assassination. I also had no idea he became friendly with Alexander Haig. Strange world, brilliant guy.

So I have a working laptop. It's still missing some important programs, such as my favorite code editor for Linux (jed) and things like 'locate'. This is the equivalent of the "Find file..." app in Windows. Without it, I feel vulnerable cuz I can get lost in all those subdirectories.

I did some useful things today. Now I'd better sleep before I forget why I did them.
