Geeking as sublimation for poverty
Jun. 22nd, 2002 12:28 pmI keep waiting for my first paycheck at my new job. The HR folks that spoke to my group on the first day said we'd get direct deposit the first time. That day of training was not at my regular office, so of course I heard different answers yesterday. A live check will arrive at my apartment next Friday. Gah. I am sooo broke for earning more money than ever.
Being broke but needing nutrients is teaching me a lot about sniffing out what foods I need and how to get them. For example, soy burgers cannot be cooked in the oven for the rack because they lack enough inherent moisture. Pan frying in a covered skillet with some soy sauce and a little oil, especially on low setting, does the trick for keeping them moist and edible. This efficient research and succulent result made great use of a pattie that's been sitting in the freezer for months.
I'm at my cousin Nancy's place, fixing her computer. I'm setting up her system as a dual-boot Win2k/Linux machine. You would not believe how many things I've done to this machine in the process of getting "a little extra space" for files -- set and reset jumper clips and wires, run boot utilities, rebooted, sighed.
By the way, my email stopped working sometime last night. I have no idea why, although my ISP thinks the server just needed a reboot. (I suspect that's what you get for running Solaris instead of a BSD permutation or Linux.) I've had the same email address since 1996 and their reliability has been a component of that. If you're trying to get in touch with me, just attach a message to this post.
