I'm addicted to bush-league evil
Apr. 5th, 2002 12:51 pmI'm listening to my local NPR station, WBUR Boston (yes yes, it's pronounced "W.B.U. ahhh" here). I mention their name for a couple reasons:
Today's load was their introduction of the Newsmaker Pledge Level. You give them $1000 and they'll give you a tour of the news facilities at WBUR.
Okay, this pisses me off. National Public Radio. "We're funded by you, our listeners...", but some listeners are more equal than others. I realize NPR is a private but non-profit entity and they have no obligation to be nice to listeners. I realize only 10% of listeners ever cough up a penny. Fine. Their memes have embedded.
Still, why do you need to give a grand to see the news get made? You can get backstage at a Broadway show for less than that. Heck, you can watch the local talk radio hosers foam at the mouth for free, I suspect. One thousand dollars?
NPR's fight against microchannel FM stations has been a stick in the eye to Allston-Brighton Free Radio, WBUR's neighbor. NPR seems to feel they get to be The Public. "There is no other public. Submit to our will. Here's 'Only a Game' and three hours of BBC World Service."
Gah. I have to get to work. Think about it.
-Bullshit, Cape Cash & the Eyelets, ps/d
- I dislike them;
- I prefer to give money to the NPR station I grew up with in upstate New York (WRVO Oswego) because they appreciate the money more, play old radio shows from the 1940s, and play Canadian radio shows;
- They're constantly pulling some sh*t.
