pseydtonne: Behold the Operator, speaking into a 1930s headset with its large mouthpiece. (Default)
Now that I've got the basic setup working, I can see the appeal of this writing format. I type into this window that looks like a piece of foolscap (scrap paper). The window doesn't use a lot of RAM so I can leave it around one of my four desktops and type into it when the whim strikes me. Coolness.

It does use more RAM than maybe I'd like, but there are other versions of the window (one for emacs, a text editor I use, and other in Perl, a programming language I am learning). This satisfies the geek in me while also allowing the writer to get some fricking work done.

I've been obsessed with RAM usage recently. This came from noticing that most web browsers were hanging my machine even though I have a quarter-gig of RAM. I'd tell you all the stuff I'm using, but it's really anal of me.

I'm in this struggle with myself about my hardcore geek desires versus my drive to get something done. These drives are usually complimentary, allowing me to think about things and turn those thoughts into completed tasks. However, the geek has gotten some serious bloodlust because of my growing skill in using Linux.

"You can now fix ANYTHING! Just learn how," my geek says.

"Didn't you get this so you could get work done, not work on the machine?" my creative side says.

Perhaps if I clarify the names of these sides, I'd have a clearer picture of which is worth hearing. The geek isn't purely a geek -- it's tweaking, it's editing, it's ditzy whims and settings, it's flourishes and final touches. The writer is the creator, making the bolder movements, putting full things into the world.

As I learn to reconcile my minds, I can get more done. Right? Would I merely be complacent and vacant if the struggle ended? Would my inner Hegel catch cholera?

I should sleep on such thoughts. I have work to do, most of which will involve plenty of computer time. Too bad the spell-check setting doesn't work on this; if it did, I wouldn't have to spend a moment editing. I spent too much of my life editing to ignore the utility of it...

...even when it would save a couple minutes.
