Probably costs less, too...
Nov. 21st, 2005 06:55 pmI have been gaining muscle control and physical stamina. I have not lost any weight but I have put the weight to better use. I feel that I am putting my body to better use.
What is my secret? What could give me muscle tone? Having to move out of an apartment one compact car load at a time.
Every time I lift a heavy thing and try to slide it into my hatchback, I get a little more of a workout. Had I been able to fit all of this into one truck load, I would've collapsed and stopped. Instead, I have to go back to the old place every few days, feed the goldfish, open the windows and shove stuff around.
As I mentioned yesterday I had
quem98's help Saturday as I shoved my towers and some other crap into the car. She also helped me to roll up one of my threadbare oriental rugs. Then we realized there was not enough room to put it in Zoe (my car, for those of you not familiar after 6.5 years) because the shotgun seat got in the way when it had a passenger.
I really wanted to get the big baker's rack and the rugs to Lexington. This was a mental milestone for me: if I could get all of my computers back on the rack, I could start getting some work done. I could set up the new office, finish fixing
grace_of_gemini's computer (which I've stalled on for a while and I suck about that) and otherwise get comfortable. I could even set up a server and start the Xterm experiments well ahead of Arisia.
I have five different kinds of pseudo-dummy terminals I would like to test with a single Linux server: a Sun Ray (I have three of those), an H-P Envizex II, an NCR-based box (the monitor is by "NCD") that a guy gave me a dollar to take off his hands, an iOpener and a Compaq laptop with a Pentium II processor (got a few of those, too).
The laptops work. I know the iOpener will work as is but I'd like to automate its process for becoming a terminal (
hakamadare and I would have to type the command by hand each time we rebooted an iOpener). The NCD worked in the past and I have web sites about using it but I've never turned it on. The Envizex II has web sites and a dongle for VGA but... who knows what'll happen? The Sun Rays may force me to build a Solaris box but I have one of those and Solaris 9 to run on it.
The big goal isn't merely getting them working: it's getting comfortable with running xterms and performing the X serve-out commands with aplomb. I've learned a lot of geekery in the past year but most of it has been command-line only. I want to add to my repertoire.
I hauled the rugs and the disassembled baker's rack yesterday evening. With the rugs set up in the bedroom and office, I am getting a lot less echo and I feel more at home in Lexington. Next I can get the rack built and get going. Then again, I've got another workout for this evening: the Melrose landlady wants the painters to start coming in. Since I don't live there anymore, that's not a problem. I just need to haul the last stuff out of my old bedroom so that they won't trip on anything. They can slap down a drop cloth for the hardwood floor and get to it. In turn, she let me have an extra weekend for moving stuff. That helps me immensely.
-off to exercise and shuffle stuff, Dante
